Kickstart Your Momentum: Achieving Goals Through Small Wins

When I decided to re-brand to the Momentum Club, the message I really wanted to portray is that anyone can become whoever they want to be in life. This all starts by creating momentum. So how do we start on that path towards greatness and how do we ultimately build momentum?

It all starts by dreaming big. What do we want to accomplish in life? Is there a certain goal that we want to work towards?

No matter how big your ambitions the following framework should help you start the momentum train:

  • Start small – Think about 1 task, no matter how small, that will help towards your goal per day to begin with. For example, if you are trying if you are want to loose weight a task could be to choose a banana over a chocolate bar. This task is very minor in the grand scheme but it’s a win, which is satisfying. The more the little wins add up the closer you become to your goals.
  • Build habits – On average it takes 66 days to build a habit, which sounds a lot however is only 2 months or so. If we start to build good habits and habit stack these (combining tasks to build a bigger habit) this will start to accelerate progress to reach goals. Atomic Habits by James Clear provides a perfect insight into habits, how to build them and why they are important, a real worthwhile read.
  • Create accountability – Now this could be internal accountability through the power of journaling techniques or things such as charts when you have completed tasks for example. However, accountability can come externally from your peers. Ask a friend or colleague to check in on you to make sure you are on track. Admittedly this one is slightly tougher and is reliant on someone else being invested in your goals.

These steps will hopefully kick off the momentum train, remember it is small steps that will always succeed. To begin with small tasks will seem worthless but one day you will look back and realise that every action taken towards your goal was worth while.

The hardest days are the days where the motivation is not there, you don’t want to do tasks that you would usually do and feel in a bit of a slump. This is where focusing on small wins is important. A good example of this could be you are wanting to go the gym but not feeling it (which is fine) however what’s the first step towards that “goal”? Getting out of bed, you do that, that’s a win. Next step put on the gym clothes, 2nd win. Grab some food, win number 3. Get in the car, win number 4. Get to the gym, win number 5. Ultimately, by the time you get to the gym it will feel like a reward as you have won 4 times before getting to the ultimate goal.

In summary, the real key of building momentum is keep showing up. Even though it may be hard, the small wins add up which creates the sense of momentum in your day to life and when you are driving towards your goals.
