We are now 3/12 of the way through 2025 (scary I know), if your year has been anything like mine it has been awfully busy. Trying to juggle multiple things at once and that’s only at work let alone within your personal life. When we are trying to complete too much or stretching ourselves thin it can cause burn out.
The World Health Organisation has called burn out a “workplace phenomenon” but it is not a mental or physical health issue more a combination of different things such as stress and depression combined to create this feeling of burn out. If you want to learn more about burn out and symptoms of this visit Burnout – Mental Health UK .
However, the best way to avoid burnout is try stop yourself reaching it and understanding what the signs of potential burn out.
For me, I know when I’m reaching burn out as I become more and more unmotivated with each day that passes, and tasks I do complete, I complete with less satisfaction and achievement. Physically, I feel tired to the point I don’t want to leave bed, sometimes I have moments where I feel physically unwell with muscles pains which ease after rest. So how have I learned to still juggle the many facets of my life without hitting that proverbial wall?
- Take time out for yourself – this is so important and something we as humans don’t do often enough as human nature is to put others first before us. However, taking some time out to do something you really want to do and something that makes you happy is really important to help prevent burnout. This for me would be taking time to go to the gym for a workout, for you it could be something totally different like spending time with family etc.
- Plan out your days – You may think you already do this however is it written down? do you tick off tasks once their done? Planning out your days is incredibly important more for not overworking yourself but also this aids in motivation. The satisfaction of ticking something of your to do list is really satisfying. Planning your days has also never been easier, especially in the digital age where you can add your lists onto your phone’s calendar or into your notes app. Take a quick 5 minutes at the end of each day and create a rough plan for the next day. Like all good plans things can change which is alright but if you plan in advance you are able to deal with changes better and help deal with potential overworking situations.
- Self Care – Now this is purposefully left fairly broad as I know everyone’s version is different. As previously mentioned, I love going to the gym which is what I use as a big source of self care, however I’m also a big sucker for things like yoga and meditation to help ground myself. Whatever it may be you would usually do for self care, make time for it. Plan for it at the very minimum once a week.
More likely than not we have all faced burn out at some point in our adult life, even if we haven’t realised it. It’s a scary place to be, that feeling of hopelessness that things won’t get better, the physical feeling of being exhausted both physically and mentally its not a good place to be in. However, from personal experience there is a way out, don’t be afraid to hit the reset button every once in while. Take the time out for yourself, be that bit selfish.
