Now if you come from the corporate world like I do, you’ll know all about the world of goals and objectives. These often get forgotten about mid way through the working year and you automatically start panicking that you might not be eligible for that promotion or your not going to pick up that bonus at the end of year right?
Well goals shouldn’t be like that, goals should be super motivational and should want to drive towards success. I only started using goals in daily life recently. I have always been demotivated by the corporate idea of goals because the theory behind these is that we are looking at the big picture and not at each task we are carrying out. How can you reach a goal if we don’t delve into the processes behind these goals? This is where the art of sub goals take place.

Breaking a big goal down may seam like a huge task but it really doesn’t have to be. I break my goals down into 2, more manageable, chunks:
- Day to day goals – These are the simple processes that you have to carry out each day in order for you to build to the big goal. For example, you are looking to loose a certain amount of weight over a period of time, a day to day goal would be to eat healthy and go to the gym.
- Weekly goals – Each week should have its own goal, this way you can celebrate small wins which is incredibly motivating and will push you on to success because who doesn’t love winning? Going to back to my previous example a weekly goal may be to loose x amount of weight that week or go to the gym x amount of times .
Now theatrically that is the only two breakdowns you will need when it comes to goals however another big thing to remember to carry out is regular reviews. These are normally best done at monthly intervals. Use these reviews to see what is working well or what is not working as well. This is the point’s on the journey towards your goals to take a breath and check your progress and ultimately if something needs changed to your day to day or weekly goals this is the time to make change (and don’t be afraid to make change if this is going to benefit you in the long run). Be honest with yourself.
One last (very) important thing to say about goal setting, yes it is great to have goals and I would never stray away from goals, however the most important thing about goals is the journey to the goal. The processes, planning and preparation each day helps take you to the goal and what you will gain from implanting processes in your life is consistency which will turn into habits and will make reaching your goals far easier in the long run.
