Slowing Down, Find Your Calm

In 2024, it seems that we are all in a mad rush all the time. Tight work deadlines, busy social life’s and the endless scrolling through social media are becoming standard everyday occurrences. With everything that goes on in everyday life, I feel that we forget to take time out for ourselves and loved ones. I find myself guilty of this far too often. This is where the art of slowing down can help you reconnect with yourself and those close to you.

The first step to slowing down is cutting out bad habits. We all get to little bad habits, that early morning scroll through TikTok etc. However, if we can break these bad habits and turn them into good ones that will go a long way to help slow you down. To do this you have to look slightly deeper, as the book Atomic Habits says, to break bad habits and strive for good habits, you need to look at your processes. You need to refine how you do certain tasks and look inwardly to map out the most effective way to do these tasks. Once you have figured out good habits to get into then you can start doing tasks to help you slow down.

I have found a number of methods to help me slow down and connect with myself and those close to me:

  • Yoga – I couldn’t recommend yoga enough, this has truly revolutionised my life. As an athlete it is amazing for recovery, getting really deep stretches and has the ability to get rid of any aches and pains. However, from a wellness prospective it allows you to connect to your breath. The movement between yoga moves are focussed on your breathing so in turn allows you to really connect with yourself, slow down and feel totally relaxed.
  • Meditation – a new method that I have been trying out. Like yoga, meditation allows you connect with your breath but also allows you to manifest positive affirmations as part your meditation practise. This can be as little as 5/10 minutes a day. There are some great guided meditation videos on YouTube if you would like to give it shot.
  • Reduced screen time – admittedly this is still something I’m terrible for. However, by reducing screen time allows you to better connect with yourself and others. Not having the distraction of scrolling or texting allows you to have deeper, more meaningful connections and conversations with others. It is also an amazing way to slow down and feel totally chilled. Even just observing things around has the ability to be make you more fulfilled.

These are just a few tips and tricks that I have used but there are so much more out there to explore! Would love to hear any suggestions you have. Ultimately, no matter how busy you are in everyday life, you need take some time out to relax, focus on yourself and others.
